L.A. COLLEGES BENEFIT FROM LATINO GRANTS.

Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  community colleges enjoyed a banner year for receiving federal aid based on the school's service to Latino students, state, federal and college officials announced Monday.

Valley College was one of the four schools in the Los Angeles Community College District The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) is the community college district serving Los Angeles, California and some of its neighboring cities. In addition to typical college aged students, the LACCD also serves adults of all ages.  to win grants under Title V of the federal Higher Education Act The Higher Education Act may refer to an Act of either the Congress of the United States or of the Parliament of the United Kingdom.
  • The Higher Education Act of 1965, an Act of the Congress of the United States which was supposed to strengthen the resources of colleges and
 this year. Added to funds received by West Los Angeles College WLAC is a part of the California Community Colleges system, within the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD), and fully accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges[1].  last year, the district has received $11.5 million, or 20 percent of the Title V money distributed in California.

At Valley College, the money has paid for a new Student Assistance Center and programs to encourage students to concentrate their studies in mathematics, biology and chemistry. That includes the creation of a new student organization called CEMAS CEMAS Civil Engineering Materiel Acquisition System  (Chemistry, Engineering, Math and Sciences), which is also a play on the Spanish term meaning ``what more?''

Valley College President Tyree Wieder joined other college presidents Monday along with state Sen. Richard Polanco, D-Los Angeles, who presented them with certificates honoring their success in winning the grants.
