Valley College was one of the four schools in the Los Angeles Community College District The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) is the community college district serving Los Angeles, California and some of its neighboring cities. In addition to typical college aged students, the LACCD also serves adults of all ages. to win grants under Title V of the federal Higher Education Act The Higher Education Act may refer to an Act of either the Congress of the United States or of the Parliament of the United Kingdom.
At Valley College, the money has paid for a new Student Assistance Center and programs to encourage students to concentrate their studies in mathematics, biology and chemistry. That includes the creation of a new student organization called CEMAS CEMAS Civil Engineering Materiel Acquisition System (Chemistry, Engineering, Math and Sciences), which is also a play on the Spanish term meaning ``what more?'' Valley College President Tyree Wieder joined other college presidents Monday along with state Sen. Richard Polanco, D-Los Angeles, who presented them with certificates honoring their success in winning the grants. |
