 prep point guard Baron Davis will announce his college intentions tonight, and UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles

UCLA University of Carrollton, TX and Lower Addison, TX
 is heavily favored over Kansas to win his services.

Davis will make his announcement at 7 p.m. on Fox Sports West, before the Clippers-Utah game at the Sports Arena.

A UCLA decision will end its eight-month pursuit of Davis, who committed to the Bruins in September, before Blazergate and Jim Harrick's dismissal.

The 6-foot-2 star from Santa Monica Crossroads School, who was dropped from Georgia Tech's list after it signed a point guard two weeks ago, would be the first major recruit of the Steve Lavin era.

Lavin may receive a second recruiting gift this week. St. John Bosco star Schea Cotton is expected to sign with UCLA sometime this week. USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  is the other finalist.

However, Cotton has not passed the SATs and is not eligible at either school until he does.

Trojans sign JC center

Junior-college center Philip Von Backstrom has signed a national letter of intent with USC.

Von Backstrom (7-2, 225), who is originally from South Africa and played club basketball in Germany, spent this past season at Western Nebraska Community College Western Nebraska Community College is a community college in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. Its athletics teams are known as the Cougars.

WNCC was previously known as Scottsbluff Junior College. Its alumni includes Pro Football Hall of Famer Dick "Night Train" Lane.

The eight-team WNBA will hold its inaugural draft today by conference call. The Los Angeles Sparks The Los Angeles Sparks are a Women's National Basketball Association team based in Los Angeles, California. Founded in 1997, they are one of the 8 original WNBA teams and were one of the teams that participated in the league's inaugural game.  have the third pick.

It's a four-round draft, and the Sparks will pick sixth in the second and fourth rounds. Selection order was determined by a nonweighted lottery on April 2. The Houston Comets have the first pick. The Sacramento Monarchs have the second.

The Sparks selected former USC coach Linda Sharp as their head coach. Sharp directed the Cheryl Miller-led Trojans to NCAA NCAA

 titles in 1983 and '84. For the past seven seasons, Sharp coached Southwest Texas.

The Sparks are also expected to sign USC forward Tina Thompson this week. Thompson has also considered playing for the rival ABL's new franchise in Long Beach.

Kara Wolters, the former Connecticut star and last season's Player of the Year, will spurn the WNBA and play professionally for the New England Blizzard The New England Blizzard was a women's professional basketball franchise based in Hartford, Connecticut. The Blizzard was a charter member of the American Basketball League (ABL).  of the ABL, a league source confirmed to The Associated Press.

Williams to fight May 15

Heavyweight Jeremy Williams headlines the May 15 boxing card at the Country Club in Reseda. His opponent is yet to be determined. The main event is scheduled for 10 rounds. Junior bantamweight contender Cecilio Espino also fights on the card.
