L.A. BEAT : ANGELS GUBICZA SET FOR SURGERY.

Right-hander Mark Gubicza will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his pitching shoulder early this week and is expected to be out at least two more months.

Gubicza, 34, acquired by the Angels from Kansas City on Oct. 28 for designated hitter Chili Davis, has been on the disabled list since April 14. He made just two starts for Angels, going 0-1 with a 25.07 earned run average.

Gubicza has a record of 132 wins and 136 losses since beginning his major- league career in 1984.

``I was going to be rested, anyhow, for six to eight weeks,'' said Gubicza, who had suffered a setback in his rehab last week. An MRI revealed a frayed labrum - not unusual in a pitcher of Gubicza's age and experience (2,223 major-league innings).

``Dr. Yocum is pretty optimistic he can go in there,'' Gubicza said, ``scope it out, give a little clean-up as he calls it and I can come back and be ready to go in a short period of time.''

Gubicza said teammate Rich DeLucia had a similar procedure done (in February 1996) and ``was back pitching in six weeks off a mound and in the major leagues in eight weeks.''

There is no timetable for Gubicza's return, however. Angels trainer Ned Bergert said Yocum wouldn't be able to pinpoint one until after the arthroscopy at Centinela Hospital.
