L.A.'s largest non-profits: ranked by annual expenditures.EXECUTIVE SUMMARY THE 50 largest non-profit organizations headquartered in Los Angeles County reported $5.5 billion in expenditures for the 2006 fiscal year, a $300 million or 6 percent increase from 2005. The organizations reported $5.8 billion in revenues in-2006. The fiscal year ended with an added $267 million to their combined net assets of $3.4 billion. Eleven organizations reported at least $100 million in expenditures during the 2006 fiscal year, the most recent period for which information is available. The list includes organizations headquartered locally that provide a wide array of services, from humanitarian organizations to Santa Monica-based Rand Corp.'s international policy analysis. Los Angeles Regional Center is one of seven such facilities in L.A. County that provide services to individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. There are 21 centers throughout the state that receive more than $3 billion in state funding. Organizations are defined by a number of criteria in order to be considered a public charity. Financially, organizations are classified as public if they receive a majority of funds from public sources such as the government or multiple individuals. Conversely, private foundations receive the majority of their funds from an individual source. The Business Journal excluded schools and direct providers of medical services from the list. Overall, the 50 largest organizations employ more than 30,000 people worldwide. [GRAPHICS OMITTED] THE PACESETTER WORLD VISION INTERNATIONAL MONROVIA-based World Vision International tops this year's list of the largest non-profit organizations ranked by expenditures. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] The grassroots organization provides humanitarian services in 98 countries. Although founded on Christian principles, the organization promotes itself as non-sectarian. (The United States Agency for International Development prohibits proselytizing by organizations that receive government grants.) In 2006, World Vision and partnership organizations distributed more than $2 billion in aid worldwide. Africa received the largest amount, with $696 million distributed or 40 percent of the organization's expenditures. Asia and the Pacific region accounted for 25 percent with $440 million in expenditures. International programs provide for emergency relief in natural disasters and war. Aid also goes to food. health, education and other humanitarian needs. Programming expenses account for 82.7 percent of expenditures. Fundraising accounts lot 9 percent, administration takes 7 percent and the balance goes to community advocacy. Founded in 1950 by American evangelist the Rev. Bob Pierce to assist children orphaned during the Korean War, World Vision has an international staff of more than 23,000 people. Its Monrovia offices house the executives, human resources, the communications department and finance office.
