Boys, the World Wrestling Federation, Disney on Ice or the rodeo? These days, apparently, plenty of people aren't calling anyone. They're going online instead, to Ticketmaster.com, a site spun off in 1998 by the company that has long dominated the world of ticketing.

The site gives event-goers the means to flip through events and schedules and order tickets. They can also link to buy CDs and music.

The site is the online extension of USA Networks' Ticketmaster ticketing empire. Once an e-commerce spin-off valued at $2.8 billion (in the days when dot-corn stocks were gold), the company was only recently brought back into the fold. Some describe the site as a textbook example of how e-commerce sites are rushing into the arms of bricks-and-mortar companies.

About 300,000 people have opened an account with Stamps.com, fueled by the lure of free postage for joining and the ease of printing out stamps from their computers at home.

So the company laid off 40 percent of its workforce and brought in a turnaround specialist to reverse the cash flow before its $270 million bank account runs out.
