L. FRANK BAUM TRUST GIVES EXCLUSIVE ENDORSEMENT TO 'THE WONDERFUL
WORLD OF OZ' THEME PARK AND FAMILY DESTINATION RESORT
NORTH HOLLYWOOD, Calif., June 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Landmark Entertainment Group and OZ Resorts & Entertainment Inc. announced today that they have signed a comprehensive agreement with The Baum Trust to support the development of "The Wonderful World of Oz" theme park and family destination resort in Kansas City, Kan.
"We are extremely pleased to become part of this unique project," said Robert Baum, managing trustee of The Baum Trust and great- grandson of L. Frank Baum, author of "The Wizard of Oz" and the other Oz books. "After reviewing Landmark's imaginative concept design and master plan, and OZ Resorts' comprehensive development plan, we could not be more enthusiastic about this project.
"The trust has been approached by many other groups in the past," Baum added. "But we declined all of the proposals because the quality wasn't there. We have committed to OZ Resorts because they have assembled a world-class team to produce a world-class project. If he were alive today, I believe L. Frank Baum himself would be proud to be involved with 'The Wonderful World of Oz.'"
"I am delighted that OZ Resorts has reached an agreement with the Baum Trust," said Gary Goddard, chief executive officer of Landmark Entertainment Group. "The agreement with Turner Home Entertainment to use images and characters from the MGM film was the essential first step in the project, but this new agreement with the Baum family for us to use all of the Oz books, and the active support of family members, will allow us to fully develop the park as a true representation of the world that L. Frank Baum created."
Founded in 1980 by Goddard and Tony Christopher, Landmark Entertainment Group is the world's largest independent themed attraction design company, specializing in creating, master planning, designing and producing in many mediums. The company's most recent achievement is the design and production of two major theme parks in Japan. Landmark has created some of the most exciting and successful attractions in the industry for clients such as Universal Studios Hollywood, Universal Studios Florida, Six Flags Corp., Busch Entertainment Corp., Caesars Palace and Sanrio Co. Ltd.
OZ Resorts & Entertainment Inc., is the privately-held Kansas corporation developing "The Wonderful World of Oz." "Family is very important to us in Kansas," said David Owen, former lieutenant governor of Kansas and the chairman and chief executive officer of OZ Resorts. "We have felt all along that it was important to have the support of the Baum family. After all, the whole Oz story originated from the efforts of L. Frank Baum."
"The Wonderful World of Oz" will include in its first phase, a 50-acre theme park, a four-star hotel and a championship golf course set on a large recreational lake. Future plans for the 900-acre development include additional hotels, a waterpark, a recreational vehicles park and several additional recreational attractions.
"We plan to build an Oz museum as well," explained Gus Fasone, local Kansas City restaurateur and president of OZ resorts. "There is a great interest in Oz memorabilia. For example, the ruby slippers are one of the most popular exhibits at the Smithsonian. The Baum family has agreed to donate rare items to the museum and they will be very helpful in encouraging other collectors to donate important items as well. We intend to create a first class museum and research facility to preserve the history of the Oz phenomenon."
OZ Resorts is working with Stephens Inc., the Arkansas-based investment banking firm as the lead investment banker for the project. Stephens Inc. is one of the largest midwest investment banking firms.
