jammer and countermeasures system, the Broad Shield Tactical Manpack (TMP TMP (thymidine monophosphate): see thymine. ) builds on the success of L-3 TRL Technology's combat-proven Broad Shield force-protection units currently deployed by coalition forces on operations. Approximately 50 percent lighter and smaller than its predecessor, Broad Shield TMPs retain all the original system's flexibility - including the same frequency range, performance, mission duration and transmit capabilities - combined with an increased ability to address simultaneous threats.

L-3 TRL Technology created this latest generation solution based on customer feedback and operational experience, as well as extensive testing of the advanced Broad Shield manpack equipment against a broad range of threats. In addition, the Broad Shield TMP also now provides wideband continuous frequency coverage without any loss of systems flexibility or ease of programming. Despite the significant reduction in size, the unit can accommodate a fully integrated standard BB-2590 (or compatible) military battery pack. Other key enhancements include the incorporation of additional direct digital synthesis Direct Digital Synthesis (DDS) is an electronic method for digitally creating arbitrary waveforms and frequencies from a single, fixed source frequency. Overview  signal generators to generate multiple simultaneous jamming signals, a zeroize button, and provision for a plug-in external remote control box.

In line with enabling the maximum flexibility and ease of upgradeability, L-3 TRL Technology has based the Broad Shield TMP design on easily configurable, common hardware units, ensuring that the systems can be readily adapted against emerging threats. The Broad Shield TMP can be configured for multiple applications, with typical roles including dismounted, vehicle, carry forward/Explosive Ordnance Disposal or base protection duties. The Broad Shield TMP can handle the diverse frequencies used by remotely controlled IEDs and employs a wide range of proven jamming modes and waveforms. It offers both the advantages of being unaffected by other systems and the architecture to accommodate changes in the threat environment.

L-3 TRL Technology's Broad Shield TMP employs a number of proven modes and techniques, designed to ensure the system's success on the ground. The system uses all available electronic counter measures jamming techniques including spot jamming, multiple-target spot jamming, and wideband noise jamming. The equipment is fully field-programmable, allowing new mission parameters and waveforms to be loaded into the unit from a PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) A handheld computer for managing contacts, appointments and tasks. It typically includes a name and address database, calendar, to-do list and note taker, which are the functions in a personal information manager (see PIM).  or laptop.
