for airborne platforms. The L-3 S/TAR ruggedized solid state recorder for high-capacity, high data rate storage applications in airborne environments is being exhibited at the L-3 Communications booth at Farnborough International `98, Booth 4-H19.

L-3's S/TAR line has been derived from the Company's state-of-the-art solid state recorders in use on space platforms and will be used for reconnaissance and instrumentation storage applications on strategic and tactical aircraft including fixed wing, helicopters and UAVs.

"After 40 years of successful tape recording in space we pioneered the shift of space data recording from tape to solid state," said Greg Roberts, president of L-3 Communication Systems - East. "We have used that expertise and technological innovation to create the S/TAR product line, the most advanced high data rate storage application for the airborne platform."

L-3's S/TAR provides many operational and performance advantages over conventional magnetic tape recorders tape recorder, device for recording information on strips of plastic tape (usually polyester) that are coated with fine particles of a magnetic substance, usually an oxide of iron, cobalt, or chromium. The coating is normally held on the tape with a special binder. , including fast, random access to mission data, simultaneous read/write capability, dramatically improved mean time between failures and multiple sensor concurrent recording with reduced lifecycle cost, size and power consumption.

L-3's S/TAR modular product line offers unique features, including an airborne on-board review capability and options for fast data download. Additionally, L-3's S/TAR has a variable capacity range from 8 GBytes to 125 GBytes, weighs 32 pounds in 0.7 cubic feet and its subassemblies can also be embedded Inserted into.
