Under the contract, which extends through 2009, the L-3 Communications division will perform work valued at approximately $25 million. The program, which may be extended through the year 2035, has a potential total value in excess of $300 million.

issues by upgrading primary mission systems and establishing an open system architecture for mission avionics. The program also will modify the electrical power and cooling systems, enabling those systems to operate without external support equipment and without running aircraft engines.

The aircraft modification work will be performed at the L-3 IS Waco, Texas facility. L-3 IS will provide the upgrades to the power and cooling systems, develop aircraft A-kits, and integrate and test the upgraded mission systems.

"We're extremely proud to have won this vital program with our partners at Rockwell Collins," said Bob Drewes, president of L-3 Integrated Systems. "The E-6B is a strategically important asset in our nation's defense. We're very pleased that the Navy has demonstrated their confidence in our team by choosing to extend our long standing relationship on the platform."

For more than 28 years, L-3 has supported the U.S. Navy's E-6 mission systems improvements, including, over the past decade, conversion of the entire E-6 fleet to perform missions previously performed by the E-6A Take Charge and Move Out (TACAMO TACAMO Take Charge & Move Out ) and EC-135 Airborne Command Post A suitably equipped aircraft used by the commander for the control of his or her forces.  (ABNCP ABNCP Airborne Command Post
