L-3 Communications' Link Simulation and Training Division Awarded $19 Million to Upgrade B-2A Trainers.

) announced today that its Link Simulation and Training (Link) division has been awarded two delivery orders totaling approximately $19 million to complete Link 16 upgrades to the U.S. Air Force's B-2A Spirit Aircrew Training System (ATS) and Maintenance Training System (MTS (1) See Microsoft Transaction Server.

). These upgrades will bring B-2A training devices concurrent with the aircraft's Link 16 mission capabilities.

B-2A ATS Link 16 upgrades will be made to three B-2A Weapon System Trainers and one Mission Trainer. Link 16 upgrades also will be made to 22 B-2A MTS devices.

The B-2A ATS and MTS, both located at Whiteman Air Force Base Whiteman Air Force Base (Whiteman AFB) is a base of the United States Air Force in Johnson County, Missouri, United States. It is near the town of Knob Noster, Missouri. The population was 3,814 at the 2000 census. , MO, support initial and continuation aircrew and maintenance training.

"These upgrades will enable B-2A aircrew training devices to simulate the exchange of real-time information concerning threats, friendly aircraft, targets and overall air and ground order of battle, in addition to providing critical maintenance training of the Link 16 systems," said David Williams, vice president of training services for Link Simulation and Training. "The trainers' improved command, control, communication and intelligence mission effectiveness will serve as another example of the close working relationship between Link, the U.S. Air Force and Northrop Grumman in modernizing the B-2A Aircrew Training System."

This delivery order is part of a trainer modification plan identified in the B-2A Training System Contractor Logistics Support contract Link received in 1998. The indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity (ID/IQ ID/IQ Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity

) contract calls for Link to provide all contractor-supplied services and product updates for the B-2A Spirit training system. These modifications are part of an ongoing effort to upgrade the training system to maintain concurrency Operations that are performed simultaneously within the computer.
