L-3 Communcations Integrated Systems Announces Team for UK's Project HELIX.

) announced today that its Integrated Systems division (L-3 IS) has teamed with QinetiQ and LogicaCMG for the United Kingdom Ministry of Defence's Project HELIX. HELIX is a multi-stage acquisition of an upgraded mission suite for the Nimrod Nimrod, in the Bible, descendant of Cush who is recorded as a mighty hunter.

The UK Ministry of Defence has selected L-3 IS for Stage 1 of the Assessment Phase of Project HELIX. The current stage is focused on requirements understanding, with 3 contractors competing for down select for Stage 2 architecture studies in 2005 and Stage 3 system design in 2006. L-3 IS has partnered with QinetiQ, a UK company with experience and expertise in operational analysis and development of Defence technologies. QinetiQ's Malvern Technology Centre will support the development of an integrated technology assessment plan for HELIX, while the Farnborough facility will assist in conducting an operational analysis of the current system and develop a concept of analysis for the future HELIX-enabled platform. In subsequent phases, QinetiQ's technology is expected to contribute to the L-3 IS HELIX capability, maximizing the pull-through of the UK Ministry of Defence's research investments in this highly specialized domain.

L-3 IS has also teamed with LogicaCMG, a UK company whose Space and Defence Division has provided information technology, security services, and communications support to the Nimrod R1 and a range of other UK Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition, and Reconnaissance (ISTAR (programming, tool) ISTAR - An experimental IPSE from Imperial Software Technology. ) projects.  will analyze and develop requirements for the HELIX security architecture, provide domain expertise to operational analysis, and use their independent systems integration capabilities to identify UK companies with unique technology offerings for HELIX. In future phases, LogicaCMG is expected to assist in the certification and accreditation of the HELIX system and to contribute significantly to the HELIX information management infrastructure.

L- 3 IS' addition of QinetiQ and LogicaCMG to the HELIX team further strengthens a world-class systems engineering capability.
