A revolutionary design in the light path for Texas Instruments' DLP front and rear projection light engines, LightGate(TM) dramatically adds to the capability of ultra-high contrast ratio image enhancements, superseding that of motion picture film into true next-generation world-class image quality.

The breakthrough design can be applied to any DLP-based front and rear video projection device screen such as projection big screen televisions, consumer video projectors, as well as professional and large-venue projection systems.

Recent data from iSuppli/Stanford Resources on units 40 inches and larger show that DLP is making steady progress in the TV market. Traditional cathode ray tube TVs still make up the majority of units shipped, taking 94.6 percent of the market in 2002 and 81.3 percent in 2003.

DLP, however, is climbing: It was up to 3.8 percent in 2003 from a mere 0.8 percent in 2002. ISuppli expects DLP market share to reach 10.5 percent in 2005.

Developed for applications in current 720p and 1080p single and 3 Chip DLP based displays as well as future 4K (3840 by 2160 pixels) devices and higher, the short-path LightGate(TM) design differs from the use of common irises and light flags to control the total effective light output of a display device, by addressing in real-time full spectrum gamma correction control on an individual pixel basis.

A wide-gamut monochrome LCD panel displaying 50% black to grey scale of the live image information is inserted between the light source's final condenser and the DMD device. The LCD panel contains a precision focus short-throw micro lens array that individually focuses the light on each DMD's pixel after passing through the correspondent pixel on the light controlling LCD panel.

Capable of flagging each individual pixel of up to 1000:1 of the total incident light before it hits the DMD's correspondent mirror, precise black to 50% grey shading and absolute blacks are obtained while not affecting the above 50% to 100% white areas of the image, providing a new dimensionality and wide grayscale image gradation never before achievable, with true-to-life contrast ratios from pure white to the deepest blacks, well in excess of 1,000,000:1.
