L&I SECRETARY CHALLENGES HONOR STUDENTS TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE
LOWER GWYNEDD, Pa., April 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Labor and Industry Secretary Tom Foley tonight urged honor students from Philadelphia area Catholic high schools to "make choices, take chances and do your best at whatever you do."
Foley addressed the high schools' academic honors convocation at Gwynedd Mercy College. The convocation honored the top two graduating students in each high school in the Philadelphia Archdiocese.
"Never doubt that you can make a difference, if you take those abilities that we honor you for this evening and act on them with zeal, with courage, with compassion and above all with passion," Foley told the students.
Foley, an alumnus of Bishop McDevitt High School in Montgomery County, pointed to community service as an everyday example of how students can begin to make that difference.
Citing a sermon by Bishop Nicholas Dattilo of the Harrisburg Diocese, Foley reminded students that "the enemy of happiness is selfishness and that it is in giving that we receive."
Earlier in the day Foley participated in two of more than 150 Pennsylvania Conservation Corps projects celebrating Pennsylvania Youth Service Day.
