New Jersey State Police Take a Bite Out Of Crime

The NJSP and technology partners took home silver Value Chain Awards in the Government category for a customized MiniBoss(TM) M2M surveillance and tracking solution designed to stop crimes in action, recover stolen goods, prosecute criminals and prevent future theft by breaking up organized crime rings. The keystone Kyocera 200 Module provides data and assisted GPS in real time from virtually anywhere. Sendum served as the system integrator and supplied a customized version of its Sendum VT100 tracking hardware, and Bulldog Technologies supplied its MiniBoss firmware and Bosstrak software applications for remote surveillance, tracking and Geofencing operations, in addition to security gateway applications, software routers, a database application and user-friendly web interfaces.

Frustrated by the limitations of traditional surveillance and tracking methods, the N.J. State Police turned to M2M technology for a remote tracking solution to save time and money while improving crime detection and prevention. Carried by informants, undercover agents and placed on merchandise, the customized MiniBoss solution is used three or four times a month in covert sting operations to apprehend cargo thieves and recover stolen merchandise. MiniBoss allows investigators to keep a safe distance while keeping an eye on criminal activity and gives increased visibility inside buildings, trucks and metal containers. From January 2005 to February 2006, the NJSP Cargo Theft Unit recovered and/or tracked stolen property valued at more than $515,000. By implementing this system, investigators can now track stolen goods through different levels of black market distribution to uncover entire cargo theft operations and break up organized crime rings.

Big Eagle Bird's Eye Accuracy Ensures Environmental Safety and Soil Nutrition

Big Eagle Services and a team of technology partners received silver Value Chain Awards in the Energy and Utilities category for a sophisticated M2M solution designed to monitor and manage fleet vehicles, including highly specialized waste clean-up and land-spraying equipment, as well as monitor and manage environmental compliance and consolidate billing procedures. Key to the solution's success is the Kyocera 200 Module, which provides powerful real time data, voice and telemetry CDMA-based communications from even the most remote oil field locations. Telus Geomatics was the system integrator and supplied specialized Web and GPS-based GeoExplorer tracking and monitoring software; TechnoCom assisted in system design, provided its LMU 4000 hardware for all fleet vehicles and provided the backend device management system; and Telus Mobility provides nationwide CDMA wireless service across Canada where the solution is in operation.

The Big Eagle Services solution was implemented across a diversified fleet of specialized heavy equipment and "light duty" vehicles traveling on surface streets. The technology captures and records, in five second intervals, numerous data elements such as GPS information, state of ignition, power take off, vehicle air brakes and tank valves, just to name a few. These data elements provide the ability to "see" vehicle and equipment function in real time so command central can respond immediately to remotely manage critical operations with unprecedented accuracy. For instance, when land-spraying nutrient rich slurry to maintain soil health and fertility, Big Eagle can monitor and remotely control the exact speed threshold alarms of vehicles traveling over land to guarantee that the operators of these vehicles do not abuse the highly specialized float tires designed to travel lightly across farm fields without leaving tracks. By leveraging the solution's intelligence capability, Big Eagle can adhere to strict environmental compliance regulations and provide quantifiable validation to its clients. In addition, the system monitors overall fleet performance and schedules regular vehicle maintenance before costly repairs are required. The solution improved Big Eagle's business operations -- from fleet management, to billing and client reporting -- while it helped cut operating costs and red tape.
