Alice Winston lives on a horse ranch in Colorado. Her father struggles to keep the ranch afloat; her mother never leaves her bedroom; her older sister has eloped with a rodeo cowboy; and a sixth-grade classmate Alice barely knew drowns in a nearby canal. As Alice feels her father is distracted by money troubles and her mother is totally absent due to depression, she struggles to find a way to get through it all.
