Kshs 1.9 million raised for training Kenyan women journalists. /Kshs 1,9 million collectes pour la formation des femmes journalistes Kenyanes.

The Association of Media Women in Kenya (AMWIK) held its annual scholarship fund raising dinner in support of women journalists on 29 July 2005 at The Grand Regency Hotel, Nairobi, Kenya. The annual event is a revolving fund that sponsors AMWIK members for higher education at local universities. Last year, a similar initiative raised Ksh 1.3 million that enabled four members to pursue and complete their degree courses. Two are at The University of Nairobi and another two at The Catholic University of Eastern Africa.

This year's fund raising dinner raised a total of Ksh 1.9 million with top sponsorship from companies such as East African Portland Cement donating Ksh 250,000, Kenya Tourism Board Ksh 200,000, The Nation Media Group Ksh 50,000, advertising space and two postgraduate scholarships at the University of Nairobi School of Journalism. Other companies who supported this worthy cause included The Standard Group, Safaricom, CIC, Citizen, Kenya Broadcasting Corporation, Keroche Industries and Action Aid.

The colorful and fun--filled occasion was graced by various dignitaries among them, Professor Ayang Nyongo, Minister for planning and National Development, Hon Linah Chebii Kilimo, Minister for Immigration, Dr. Alfred Mutua, the Government spokesman, Prof John and Leah Marangu, Dr. Julia Ojiambo, CEOs and representatives from the various sponsoring organizations.

In her speech entitled "Take Your Sit", veteran broadcaster Elizabeth Omollo encouraged women journalists to exert themselves, acquire adequate knowledge and training in their field, gain confidence and stick their heads above the waters in all situations, no matter how competitive the field is. She further urged them to believe in themselves and trust that anything a man can do, they can do better.

The Chairperson of AMWIK, Rose Lukalo-Owino, and Programmes Coordinator, Pamela Mburia, thanked the sponsors and guests for their overwhelming support to enable women journalists acquire higher education for a more informed society.

D'autres compagnies qui ont soutenu cette noble cause sont notamment the Standard Group, Safaricom, CIC, Citizen, Keny a Broadcasting Corporation, Kerahe Industries et Aide et Action.

L'evenement eclatant tant en couleurs qu'en divertissement fut rehausse par la presence de plusieurs hauts responsables dont le Professeur Anyang Nyong , Ministre du Plan et du Developpement national, Hon Linah Chebii Kilimo, Ministre de l'Immigration, Dr Alfred Mutua, Porte-parole du Gouvernement, Prof John et Leah Marangu, Dr Juli a Ojiambo, des Directeurs Generaux ICEO) et des representants de diverses organismes de financement.

Dans son discours intitule "Take Your Sit" ("Prends Ton Siege"), la journaliste veteran Elizabeth Omollo a encourage les femmes journalistes en disant que, bien que la route soit dure, elles doivent se depenser, acquerir des connaissances adequates et une formation dans leurs domaines, gagner la confiance et se maintenir au-dessus des troubles dans toutes les situations, quelle que soit la competition dans le domaine. Elle les a en outre appelees a se faire confiance elles-memes et a croire qu'elles sont capables de faire mieux tout ce que l'homme peut faire.

La Presidente d'AMWIK, Rose Rukalo-Owino, et la Coordinatrice des Programmes, Pamela Mburia, ont remercie les sponsors et les invites pour leur immense soutien pour permettre aux femmes journalistes d'acquerir l'enseignement superieur en vue d'une societe mieux informee.
