European appetite for anti-Americanism, mimicking the nutty, cartoonish placards carried at protest rallies: Bush brandishing a wad of money, with "ENRON" tattooed on his forehead, a Hitlerian Cheney with a seeping oil mustache and the words "GOT OIL?" on hisforehead ... And that's not all: The U.K. subtitle reads, "From Boom to Bust in Three Scandalous Years." Contrast this to the U.S. version, which carries a rather more anodyne anodyne /an·o·dyne/ (an´ah-din) 1. relieving pain. 2. a medicine that eases pain. an·o·dyne n. An agent that relieves pain. text cover and the vague subtitle "Losing Our Way in the New Century." Krugman's writings can be every bit as cartoonish and nutty as the images on the cover, of course, so at least the U.K. version will get points for truth-in-advertising. |
