Kosan Announces Issuance of Key European Patent for Polyketide Technologies.

Business Editors & Health/Medical Writers

HAYWARD, Calif.--(BW HealthWire)--Nov. 9, 2001

Kosan Biosciences Incorporated (Nasdaq:KOSN) announced today that the European Patent Office issued EP Patent No. 725,778, which is exclusively licensed to Kosan by The Leland Stanford Jr. University.

The claims of this patent cover methods, recombinant cells and DNA DNA: see nucleic acid.
DNA
 or deoxyribonucleic acid

One of two types of nucleic acid (the other is RNA); a complex organic compound found in all living cells and many viruses. It is the chemical substance of genes.

2. xenogeneic.

het·er·ol·o·gous
adj.
1.
host cells, as well as making novel polyketides from hybrid polyketide synthase Polyketide synthases, also known as PKSs, are a family of enzymes or enzyme complexes that produce polyketides, a large class of secondary metabolites, in bacteria, fungi, plants, and animals.  enzymes made using recombinant DNA technology recombinant DNA technology

Recombining of DNA molecules from two different species that are inserted into a host organism to produce new genetic combinations that are of value to science, medicine, agriculture, or industry.
. Polyketides are made in small amounts in microorganisms and are difficult to make or modify chemically. Kosan's technologies enable the manipulation and production of polyketides that are otherwise not possible. Using these technologies, Kosan scientists have transferred genes to better hosts to facilitate over-production and to modify, add or delete polyketide genes to make specific and predictable improvements to polyketides.

"The issuance of this patent is a major milestone in Kosan's progress in protecting its proprietary technologies in the major markets worldwide," said Kevin Kaster, Vice President of Intellectual Property at Kosan.

Kosan Biosciences Incorporated is a biotechnology company that has proprietary gene-engineering technologies for the manipulation and production of polyketides, a rich source of pharmaceuticals. Kosan uses its platform technologies to develop product candidates that target large pharmaceutical markets.
