Kopin to Unveil New Product Applications at 32nd Annual Display Symposium; Wireless Internet Browser, Digital Navigation Assistant Among Featured Applications.Business/Technology Editors SAN JOSE San Jose, city, United States San Jose (sănəzā`, săn hōzā`), city (1990 pop. 782,248), seat of Santa Clara co., W central Calif.; founded 1777, inc. 1850. , Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 5, 2001 Kopin Corporation (Nasdaq: KOPN) will feature an array of new consumer and military product applications at the Society for Information Display's (SID) 32nd Annual Symposium symposium In ancient Greece, an aristocratic banquet at which men met to discuss philosophical and political issues and recite poetry. It began as a warrior feast. Rooms were designed specifically for the proceedings. to be held June 5th through June 7th at the San Jose Convention Center. The common element in each of these applications is Kopin's CyberDisplay(TM), the smallest high-resolution, high-performance transmissive active matrix liquid crystal display liquid crystal display (LCD) Optoelectronic device used in displays for watches, calculators, notebook computers, and other electronic devices. Current passed through specific portions of the liquid crystal solution causes the crystals to align, blocking the passage of light. (AMLCD (Active Matrix LCD) See active matrix. ) in the world. "The microdisplay represents the enabling imaging technology for next-generation products," said Michael Presz, vice president and general manager of Kopin's Visual Products Group. "The product applications being unveiled by Kopin and its industry partners at the SID conference provide just a taste of the opportunities that we envision for our CyberDisplay." Among the applications Kopin (Booth #434/533) will feature: - CyberMan(TM) 2321D(T): A portable personal video entertainment system, the CyberMan(TM) 2321D(T), is already being marketed in China by Oriscape Electronics Co. Ltd. (www.oriscape.com.cn). The system is composed of a head-mounted display system and a portable video compact disc (VCD) player, video game controller or TV receiver. The binocular optical system uses two color CyberDisplay 320C displays, and shows a brilliant 300-line (horizontal resolution) image with a 21-degree viewing angle. It provides the user with the virtual equivalent of a 36-inch screen viewed from eight feet away. The lightweight CyberMan(TM) 2321D(T) system has an embedded battery that supports full-color video viewing for up to 3.5 hours. - Digital Navigation Assistant (DNA): Navitrak International Corp. (www.navitrak.com) of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada created this handheld device that incorporates high-resolution topographic maps and imagery, a high-precision electronic compass and a Global Positioning System (GPS) in a portable, rugged, battery-operated package. The DNA can display multiple types of map data (including topographic maps, satellite imagery, street maps and digital elevation data). These services are targeted to professional and institutional users for applications as diverse as forestry firefighting, military, law enforcement and search and rescue. - Helmet Integrated Display and Sighting System (HIDSS): Developed for the Comanche Helicopter by Kaiser Electronics (www.kaisere.com) of San Jose, California, the HIDSS has been redesigned to replace the heavy, bulky cathode ray tube with two CyberDisplay 1280 AMLCDs (1280x1024). The system boasts a 30 degrees x 52 degrees field of view in a compact, lightweight package, which meets all US Army crash safety requirements and is adaptable to a variety of rotorcraft platforms and missions. - iCOM Personal Internet Browser: Developed by Interactive Imaging Systems (www.iisvr.com) of Rochester, New York, the iCOM Personal Internet Browser enables users to view the Internet with the clarity and quality of a 21-inch color VGA (640x480) monitor, through a wireless device that fits into the palm of the hand. The iCOM features web-browsing capabilities, complete with audio play and recording, and provides seamless access to email, messaging, the Internet, and intranet-based applications. The iCOM provides full-color VGA video imagery along with MP3 music for over 2 hours on a single lithium battery. - Light Thermal Weapon Sight (LTWS): Developed for M-16 and M-4 rifles by Raytheon Company (www.raytheon.com) in Lexington, Massachusetts, LTWS will give the soldier the ability to detect and identify targets in day or night conditions. The combination of Kopin's CyberDisplay 640M and Raytheon's focal plane array provides a high-quality, video-like image of the thermal scene, allowing the soldier to increase his situational awareness and conduct surveillance or fire control under a variety of battlefield conditions including dust, smoke and fog. - VGA Clip-On: The MicroOptical Corporation (www.microopticalcorp.com) of Westwood, Massachusetts, will debut its new VGA Clip-On using the CyberDisplay(TM) 640C (640x480) full-color display. The Model CO-3 contains a color "Clip-On" monitor with see-around display optics, articulating mounting arm, plano eyeglasses, and a belt-worn VGA interface box connected to the display by a thin cable. The display format is 24-bit true color in a 20-degree diagonal field of view. The unit is designed to provide "see-around display optics" and can be configured for either the left or right eye. "CyberDisplay subsystems are rapidly becoming the industry standard in a wide variety of applications from camcorders to hand-held Internet browsers See Web browser. to military sighting systems," said Presz. "Since we started volume production in 1999, we have already shipped more than two million CyberDisplays to our customers, including leading camcorder manufacturers such as Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Inc. The Company has combined advanced AMLCD and integrated circuit integrated circuit (IC), electronic circuit built on a semiconductor substrate, usually one of single-crystal silicon. The circuit, often called a chip, is packaged in a hermetically sealed case or a nonhermetic plastic capsule, with leads extending from it for technology to produce its CyberDisplay family of ultra-small, high-density imaging devices. The Kopin CyberDisplay(TM) family has won many international awards for innovation in the last two years, and now includes the CyberDisplay(TM) 1280, 640C, 640M, 320 and 320C - providing OEMs with powerful, high-quality display solutions for devices ranging from consumer electronics such as camcorders and digital cameras to next-generation Internet wireless handsets.
