Kohn Pedersen named finalist for design award. (Design and Development).

Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates PC has been selected as one of three finalists in the MIPIM awards competition for 2002. The project nominated is Mohegan Sun, project Sunburst, one of KPF's most exciting and expansive projects to date.

Project Sunburst is a $1 billion mixed-use destination resort developed by Trading Cove Associates for the Mohegan Tribe, on their reservation in Uncasville, Conn. KPF was responsible for programming and master planning the entire facility, as well as for the design of the dramatic exterior.

The expansion of the Mohegan Sun Casino combines diverse program elements in a rich architectural language that draws inspiration from traditional tribal myths and geological and natural forms specific to the site. In total, the project adds 5.5 million SF to the original 630,000 SF casino opened in 1996. The new areas include the Sky Casino, a 10,000-seat arena, convention center, retail and hotel. It is currently the largest private development on the East Coast of the United States.

The MIPIM Award competition rewards the most outstanding property projects on an international scale. Held annually in Cannes, France, the MIPIM Awards competition and conference draws more than 15,000 real estate professionals from around the world.
