Kodak NuVue Display Presents High-Definition Images with

Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode See LED.  Technology

Eastman Kodak Company today joined Intel at its annual developer forum to demonstrate a prototype handset pairing a powerful Intel(R) PCA (tool, programming) PCA - A dynamic analyser from DEC giving information on run-time performance and code use.  processor and high-definition Kodak NuVue display. The prototype, an early example of a new class of device called "universal communicators," combines Intel(R) XScale(TM) technology and Kodak's groundbreaking active matrix organic light emitting diode (AM OLED (Organic Light Emitting Device, Organic Light Emitting Diode) A thin film light-emitting technology that is expected to compete with LCD and plasma TVs as well as LCD monitors and readouts. ) technology to display bright, sharp images that are visible from virtually any angle. Prospective device functions include simultaneous data and voice sessions and rich media that scales across network connections.

"The Kodak NuVue display was an ideal choice to demonstrate the kind of rich, scalable media experience made possible by Intel(R) XScale technology, combined with media building blocks under development in our research lab," said Shane Wall, general manager of Intel's Emerging Platforms Lab. "OLED displays' composition and mechanics are ideally suited to present the incredible gamut of vibrant color and video effects See digital video effects.  that will be required in tomorrow's universal communicator-class devices."

The demonstration at the conference is the latest step in Kodak's industry-leading work - and commitment - to advance OLED display technology. Earlier this year, the company unveiled the Kodak EasyShare Kodak EasyShare is a sub brand of Eastman Kodak Company products identifying a consumer photography system of digital cameras, snapshot printers, printer docks, accessories, camera docks, software, and online print services. EasyShare was first introduced in 2001.  LS633 zoom digital camera, the world's first product with a full-color AM OLED display.

"The combination of high-performance processor and high-definition OLED display provides a compelling glimpse of new opportunities and new markets - for Kodak and for device manufacturers," said Donna Flamme, president, Display & Components, Eastman Kodak Company. "Our NuVue displays let consumer electronics manufacturers create more useful - and enjoyable - devices."

Research firms such as DisplaySearch and Stanford Resources predict the OLED display market could reach up to $3 billion by 2007. They anticipate consumer devices such as mobile phones, digital cameras, PDAs, and DVD players will incorporate OLED technology within five years.

Kodak scientists discovered the light-emitting properties of organic substances more than 20 years ago and patented advances in designs and materials. Through a joint manufacturing program, Kodak and SANYO Electric Co., Ltd., produced the world's first AM OLED displays for industry evaluation and manufacture displays for the Kodak LS633 camera.

OLED Technology

OLED displays comprise self-luminous pixels, requiring no backlights used in liquid crystal displays liquid crystal display (LCD)

Additional benefits over conventional technologies include higher contrast for superb readability in most lighting conditions, faster response time to support streaming video A one-way video transmission over a data network. It is widely used on the Web as well as company networks to play video clips and video broadcasts. Computers in home networks stream video to digital media hubs connected to a home theater. , and industry-leading (165 degree) viewing angle for superior ergonomics. In addition to the joint manufacturing venture for AM OLED panels with SANYO, Kodak licenses OLED technology to more than one dozen display and device manufacturers worldwide.
