Knipped in the bud?

I find it rather puzzling that in your interview with Sarah Silverman Sarah Kate Silverman (born December 1, 1970) is an American comedian, writer and actress. Although usually credited as Sarah Silverman, she is sometimes credited by her nickname Big S or Sarah 'Big S' Silverman.  [Big Gay Following, March 13] she is hailed as one for whom "no social group is safe and no subject taboo (even AIDS)," while in the same issue Chuck Knipp Chuck Knipp is an American drag comedian best known for his controversial alter ego, Shirley Q. Liquor.

Knipp is a member of the American Association of Professional Chaplains. He was ordained to the diaconate in 1997 by a bishop of the Friends Catholic Communion.

for breaking racial taboos and refusing to be bullied by various self-righteous self-appointed censors who admit they have not attended even one of his performances. Why is Knipp held to a different standard?

Margaret Cho and RuPaul are not the only people who think highly of Knipp. I and many other intelligent people enjoy Knipp's comedy for its shock value as well as its wit, playfulness, and tongue-in-cheek social satire. And I am very disturbed by belligerent crusades like those of Jasmyne Cannick that aim to silence the work of an artist on the basis of its "offensiveness." Obviously such efforts have a general chilling effect This article or section may deal primarily with the U.S. and may not present a worldwide view.  on artistic expression and fall right in line with those of the far right and religious zealots Zealots (zĕl`əts), Jewish faction traced back to the revolt of the Maccabees (2d cent. Some African-American activists are to this day attempting to ban Twain's novel Huckleberry huckleberry, any plant of the genus Gaylussacia, shrubs of the family Ericaceae (heath family), native to North and South America. Like it or not, these images are a part of our culture, and they can't be erased from history. Knipp deserves the right to have his say. When it comes to dialogue among the races, we need more speech, not less.

Chuck Knipp is a genius (and funny as hell to boot). Anyone who can't laugh at his send-up of Southern stereotypes needs their funny bone checked. To say that Shirley Q. Liquor is a "racist" caricature is banal, redundant, and misses the point entirely. One might as well say that Betty Butterfield (another Knipp creation) gives white trailer-park queens a bad name. Long live Shirley and all of her 19 chirrens!
