 and half human, aptly represents this novel about good and evil. Jeff, age 17, has an older brother he never talks about, because Troy is a murderer serving a life sentence in jail. Jeff's family has moved to a new state and started a new life. Then Troy's sentence is overturned on a technicality and he is released--and Jeff's life is immediately altered for the worse. When he tells his girlfriend about Troy, her father refuses to let her see Jeff any more, and when Jeff's rival for her affections (or so he thinks) goads Jeff on the soccer field and then goes missing, Jeff suspects Troy is behind his disappearance. Jeff's parents are eager to believe Troy is reformed and deserves a new start, but Jeff has a strong suspicion that Troy is still pure evil. But is being evil really a choice, or just a result of chemistry or circumstance? Jeff ponders this while trying to find out exactly what bitter, manipulative ma·nip·u·la·tive
