Everyone's buzzing about teen novel Cathy's Book: If Found Call [phone], and it's getting mixed reviews. Critics laud its interactive aspects, as story unravels the mystery of why Cathy's boyfriend dumped her. Readers find clues in a packet of mock evidence and by pursuing working cell numbers and web addresses. It's what else that's planted in the book that has people up in arms. The makers of CoverGirl cosmetics cut a promotional deal with the publishers, and its product names are dropped throughout the story. It features, for example, a drawing of a goth girl wearing "CoverGirl liquid pencil eyeliner" and "eye shadow in Shimmering Onyx." The authors make other commercial references, such as RadioShack, that teens identify with--but there's no promo tie-in with these companies. And that's the diff.
