) - Kirin Brewery and Intercell AG have entered into a strategic alliance whereby Kirin will receive the worldwide exclusive rights to develop, manufacture and sell pneumococcal pneumococcal /pneu·mo·coc·cal/ (-kok´al) pertaining to or caused by pneumococci.  antigens identified by Intercell, a Vienna-based company specializing in vaccines development.

Accordingly, Kirin aims to accelerate its R&D activities for antibody drugs; in particular, the ones for treating severe infections caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae Streptococcus pneu·mo·ni·ae

As an initial step, Kirin will strive to develop human monoclonal antibodies This is a list of monoclonal antibodies, antibodies which are clones of a single parent cell. When used as medications, the generic names end in -mab (see "Nomenclature of monoclonal antibodies").  using the antigens as well as its proprietary mouse technologies for human antibody production.

In addition, Kirin will make an upfront payment of 4 million euros, milestone payments on development and royalties on future sales to Intercell.
