Kinkel, who was 15 at the time of the May 21, 1998, shootings at Thurston High School in Springfield, was convicted in 1999 of multiple counts of murder and attempted murder In the criminal law, attempted murder is committed when the defendant does an act that is more than merely preparatory to the commission of the crime of murder and, at the time of these acts, the person has a specific intention to kill.  with a firearm firearm, device consisting essentially of a straight tube to propel shot, shell, or bullets by the explosion of gunpowder. A Lane County Circuit Court judge sentenced Kinkel to nearly 112 years in prison, meaning that he could not be released before 2110.

Kinkel fatally shot two Thurston students and wounded 25 others during his rampage. The night before, he killed his parents in their home east of Springfield.

Kinkel had been held at MacLaren Youth Correctional Facility MacLaren Youth Correctional Facility is a correctional facility in Woodburn, Oregon. There, he was assigned to a high-level treatment program for violent offenders, said Phil Lemman, the Oregon Youth Authority's deputy director.

Kinkel turns 25 in August. Under state law, the youth authority may only have custody of offenders who are younger than 25.

Lemman said another factor that led to Kinkel's transfer to adult prison was that he recently completed an educational program at MacLaren.

"This was a good transition point," Lemman said.

Youth Authority and Department of Corrections officials said they agreed the Oregon State Correctional Institution was the most appropriate adult facility for Kinkel.

At the Salem-area prison, Kinkel is initially being housed as part of the general inmate population. During the next month, Kinkel will undergo a series of assessments to determine the course of his incarceration Confinement in a jail or prison; imprisonment.

"He will be placed in an appropriate program following evaluation," state Department of Corrections spokeswoman Perrin Damon said.

Like most adults sentenced to long terms in Oregon's prison system, Kinkel could ultimately be transferred to another state facility, Damon said.
