Kingsville announces piano and concerto competitions.


The Music Club of Kingsville Kingsville, city (1990 pop. 25,276), seat of Kleberg co., S Tex.; inc. 1911. It is headquarters of the gigantic King Ranch. The city is a processing center for cotton, livestock, vegetables, and dairy products in a farm, oil, uranium, stone, and gas area. , Inc., will hold its annual Kingsville International Competitions--The Young Performers Concerto concerto (kənchâr`tō), musical composition usually for an orchestra and a soloist or a group of soloists. In the 16th cent. concertare and concertato implied an ensemble, either vocal or instrumental.  and Isabel Scionti Piano Solo--April 1-3, 2004, on the campus of the Texas A&M University-Kingsville.

More than $24,000 in prize money is available for distribution to winners in various contests. The highest-ranking winner will receive a minimum of $5,000 and a performance with the Corpus Christi Corpus Christi, in Christianity
Corpus Christi [Lat.,=body of Christ], feast of the Western Church, observed on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday (or on the following Sunday).
 Symphony symphony [Gr.,=sounding together], a sonata for orchestra.

The Italian operatic overture, called sinfonia, was standardized by Alessandro Scarlatti at the end of the 17th cent.
 Orchestra or the Victoria, Texas, Symphony Orchestra.

Separate contests will be held in two divisions: junior (up to age 19) and senior (ages 19-26). The junior and senior prizes offered in each of the six preliminary contests and in the piano solo The piano is often used to provide harmonic accompaniment to a voice or other instrument. However, solo parts for the piano can be found in some musical styles. These can take the form of a section in which the piano is heard more prominently than other instruments, or in which the piano  contest--piano concerto, bowed instrument concerto, non-bowed instrument concerto and piano solo--are $1,000 for first place, $500 for second place and $200 for third place respectively.

Additional special prizes include the $500 Judge Woodrow Laughlin Award for best piano concerto performance and other prizes for bowed and non-bowed instruments.

Entries must be postmarked no later than January 21, 2004. There is an entry fee of $35 per contest.
