Mapleshade just keeps right on making good, and good-sounding, jazz. Here, the King/ Bluiett Trio pay a tribute to some of their favorite people, the old Nat King Cole Trio. As Hamiet Bluiett Hamiet Bluiett (b. Brooklyn (or Lovejoy), Illinois, September 16, 1940) is an American jazz saxophonist, clarinetist, and composer. His primary instrument is the baritone saxophone, and he is considered one of the finest living players of this instrument. says, "I wanted to go back to Nat as a pianist, not as a vocalist. He was a formidable pianist, `anointed' as they say in the church. He could get to your soul like no other pianist." Never mind that there isn't a piano to be heard in these arrangements; the results are in the spirit, not the letter, of the older group. Bluiett plays baritone sax and contrabass clarinet The contrabass clarinet is the largest member of the clarinet family that has ever been in regular production or significant use. Modern contrabass clarinets are pitched in B , Rodney Jones and Ed Cherry alternate on acoustic and electric guitar, Keter Betts Keter Betts (July 25,1928–August 6, 2005) was an American jazz double bassist. Born William Thomas Betts in Port Chester, New York, he was nicknamed "Keter", a short form of the word mosquito. plays bass, Gali Sanchez joins in on percussion on one number, and Myrhh does a narration on another. A few of the tunes they play include "Makin' Whoopee," "Route 66," "Straighten Up Verb 1. straighten up - straighten oneself; "He drew himself up when he talked to his superior" draw up, pull up straighten - get up from a sitting or slouching position; "The students straightened when the teacher entered" and Fly Right," "Paper Moon," and "Christmas Song." My particular favorites are those emphasizing sax and acoustic guitar, with a big, warm bass in the background. The saxophone sound is among the best, most realistic I've heard from a recording. It's one of those reach-out-and-touch-it things. The music is appropriately soulful. I think Nat would have been pleased. |
