The goal of the LWS program is to develop the scientific understanding necessary to effectively address those aspects of the connected Sun-Earth system that directly affect life and (SDO) mission. The SDO mission, set to launch in April 2008, will use a satellite to observe the Sun's magnetic field. The ultimate goal is to understand how the Sun's magnetism affects life on Earth, as well as human technological systems. The mission will study how this magnetic field is generated and structured.
