Rather, they are about the experience of traveling or living, albeit temporarily, in a different country and culture. The motives for these trips vary. Many start with stories about the authors' childhood that may have inspired a trip back to Vietnam because the author's father fought there, or a story of the author's own childhood in Ethiopia. Other trips described are those of a journalist returning to Afghanistan after two years to see what's changed after the first two years of the current war. Another moved his family to Spain because he and his wife decided it was important to give their kids the experience of living in a foreign country. One of the best articles is called "Trying Hard to Like India," which perfectly describes a traveler's desire to like something about a trip to an exotic place that turns out to be awful even if it requires a return trip. The writing in this collection is excellent and the adventures varied. It will keep any would-be traveler excited. Nola Theiss, Sanibel, FL |
