Killed in El Salvador.

Thank you for Robert White's article on U.S policy in Latin America ("Bad Neighbor," November 18, 2005). I was once a Maryknoll Maryknoll, headquarters of the Catholic Foreign Mission Society of America, near Ossining, N.Y. A Roman Catholic community of priests (the "Maryknoll Fathers") are there especially trained for foreign missionary work. The community was established in 1911 and sent out its first missionaries in 1918. At first the territory assigned was East Asia, especially China and Korea. nun, and I knew two of the women who were killed in El Salvador twenty-five years ago. On November 27, 2005 the Maryknoll community held a moving memorial in honor of the martyred women. Thank you, Mr. White, for making it clear that our government in many ways assisted in these atrocities. We seem to be following the same pattern now, as the war in Iraq continues to claim innocent lives.
