Celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day by joining the Kindness and Justice Challenge

Your students can honor the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. by joining the Kindness and Justice Challenge, a leadership program that encourages students in grades K-12 to perform Acts of Kindness (helping others) and Acts of Justice (standing up for what is right). This year's Challenge runs from January 22-February 1, 2002. Join at http://coach.dosomething.org

Learning About Martin Luther King, Jr.

The program gives children opportunities to learn and think about King and his message. For a two-week period period, children spend 15-25 minutes each day learning about the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. and the values he taught--responsibility, tolerance, respect, nonviolence, and courage. When teacher Sharon West and her students at Memorial Junior School in Whippany, New Jersey Whippany is an unincorporated area located within Hanover Township in Morris County, New Jersey. Cedar Knolls is another unincorporated area within Hanover Township. Its name is derived from the Whippanong Native Americans, a tribe that once inhabited the area. , participated in last year's Challenge, she introduced one of these values each day, asking students to define it in their journals as it related to their own lives. They then shared their responses and worked together to create collaborative definitions, as well as strategies to make their classroom a better place.

Recording Acts recording acts n. the statutes of each state which established the keeping of official records by County Recorders or Recorder of Deeds. (See: record)  of Kindness

As their understanding of the values of kindness and justice grow, children are challenged to put these lessons into practice by performing positive acts at school, at home, and in the community. All classes keep a running tally of their positive acts. (Have them record their acts on construction paper stars to "light up" your classroom walls.) Students can also visit the organization's Web site to officially record their total acts and to learn about the positive acts performed by other students from all across the country.
