Kidnapper foiled.

Last August, Monique Williams of Syracuse, New York, was driving down a city street when she saw a young girl get into a car with a male driver. Because the man had obviously been following the girl in his car, Williams immediately became suspicious. The woman's suspicions were well-founded. As events unfolded, the girl first refused the man's offer for a ride, but when he persisted she finally gave in. It was later learned that the man, James Gilkeson, had followed the 10-year-old girl into a convenience store before continuing stalking her in his car.

Williams pulled alongside the suspicious vehicle in her own car, signaling for help to James Searight, a Department of Public Works employee who happened to be nearby. Together, they blocked Gilkeson's way and asked him if he knew the girl. Speaking to Time Warner Cable's News 10 Now, Williams said that the girl's apparent fear of being with the man prompted her quick action. When she asked Gilkeson if he knew the girl he said he did, but the frightened little girl answered with a "no." Williams recalled: "That's when I started yelling: 'You get out [of] that car, you get out right now.'"

Williams and Seafight prevented Gilkeson from leaving until police arrived. The predator was charged with endangering the welfare of a child, and that wasn't the end of the story. FBI agents also discovered child pornography on his computer, which could result in more than 20 years in prison.

Syracuse Police Chief Gary Miguel heaped praise on the pair of heroic citizens, telling News 10 Now: "It's about citizens taking their community back and that's what takes place here. When you have individuals like Monique Williams and Mr. Seafight who are aware of what is taking place in their community, who are not afraid to get involved you have what could very well have been a tragedy get averted because of those actions."
