The award category was "Geospatial: Communications."

The BE Awards of Excellence, which are presented at the annual BE Conference (www.be.org), honor the extraordinary work of Bentley users improving the world's infrastructure. These projects set benchmarks for their industries, and showcase the imagination and technical mastery of the organizations that created them.

KeySpan Communications was created to expand the scope of the 23,226-mile fiber optic network owned by its parent company, KeySpan Corporation, a major generator of electricity and distributor of natural gas. The new subsidiary was given the task of designing, engineering, and managing a new network that would not only satisfy KeySpan's operating needs, but also offer commercial broadband services See broadband and broadband service provider. .

One of the first steps it took was to seek out a complete solution for the design and management of its commercialized fiber network. After carefully examining its options, it selected Bentley communications software (communications, software) communications software - Application programs, operating system components, and probably firmware, forming part of a communication system. These different software components might be classified according to the functions within the Open Systems .

Says James Commisso, lead network engineer for KeySpan Communications, "Bentley Fiber and Bentley Inside Plant software have helped us become one the most effective companies in our industry when it comes to troubleshooting, tracking customer circuit data, and restoring service. Without question, this software has positioned KeySpan Communications as a leader in fiber network management among our industry peers."

The data in the system is integrated with other engineering and enterprise systems, including customer billing, revenue tracking, pole/conduit licensing, taxation, and network planning - among others.

Today, KeySpan Communications' fiber optic network runs through much of New York City New York City: see New York, city.
