Key Consumer Event for People with Disabilities Opens This Weekend at the Novi Convention Center.


WHAT:  Abilities Expo/Metro Detroit is the one show dedicated to
       educating and improving the lives of people with disabilities,
       senior citizens, their families & caregivers, as well as
       healthcare and education professionals.

WHEN:  Friday, August 26, 2005, 10 am - 5 pm
       Saturday, August 27, 2005, 10 am - 5 pm
       Sunday, August 28, 2005, 11 am - 5 pm

WHERE: The Novi Convention Center, Novi MI


EVENT HIGHLIGHTS:

--Chad Crittenden, most recently known for participating in the CBS (Cell Broadcast Service) See cell broadcast.  reality TV show Survivor Vanuatu, will deliver a keynote speech keynote speech

--Michigan Adaptive Sports, Michigan Sports Unlimited Sports Unlimited is a sports program of ABS-CBN in the Philippines. It features different kinds of sports, as well as ordinary and prominent sports figures. It is hosted by Dyan Castillejo and Marc Nelson. , Oakland County Parks, C.C. Plus, Dance for Fun and Fitness are a few of the companies that will be conducting demonstrations throughout the event. Demonstrations include: adaptive skiing, quad rugby, tennis, goal ball (for individuals with visually impairments) and an adaptive dance and exercise program for people with developmental and physical disabilities.

--Attendees will have a chance to discover and learn about new products and services - from computers to athletic equipment and mobility products to daily living aids - all conveniently displayed to see, test and compare. Exhibiting companies include Daimler Chrysler Dodge, Christopher and Dana Reeve Paralysis Resource Center, LiftAid Transport, and, many others.

--Local and regionally based organizations that work with people with disabilities will also be participating including Great Lake Medical Supply, Michigan Assistive Technology Hardware and software that help people who are physically impaired. Often called "accessibility options" when referring to enhancements for using the computer, the entire field of assistive technology is quite vast and even includes ramp and doorway construction in buildings to support  & Telework See telecommuting.  Loan Fund, Michigan Commission on Disability Concerns, Michigan Paralyzed Veterans of America The Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA) is a congressionally-chartered veterans' service organization in the United States of America, founded in 1946. It describes itself as having "developed a unique expertise on a wide variety of issues involving the special needs of our members , Michigan Protection & Advocacy Service, Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan, United Cerebral Palsy United Cerebral Palsy (UCP), sometimes known as United Cerebral Palsy Associations, is a network of affiliated groups in the United States which works to "advance the independence, productivity and full citizenship of people with disabilities" (from UCP's mission statement),  of Metro Detroit, and many more.

--The educational curriculum focuses on relevant topics addressing life today for individuals with disabilities, their family and caregivers. The comprehensive workshop programs will consist of consumer and professional tracks, with certificates of participation available to students, and education and healthcare professionals.

--Special show services will be available for attendees including Complimentary Wheelchair Repair provided by Hands on Concepts. Loaner Wheelchairs will be provided by Permobil. For People with Hearing Impairments, there will be a sign language interpreter available to assist persons who are deaf or hearing impaired.
