Dr. Greenidge to be Held on "World Sight Day", October 10th, 2002

Dr. Richard C. Troutman, former chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at SUNY SUNY - State University of New York  Downstate and current professor emeritus has created an endowment fund in his name in order to further ophthalmic research at SUNY Downstate Medical Center The State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn, better known as SUNY Downstate Medical Center, is an academic medical center and is the only one of its kind in the Borough of Brooklyn in New York City. , one of the nation's leading medical universities.

The endowment will enable SUNY Downstate and its Department of Ophthalmology to advance scientific research, as well as enhance patient care and resident teaching. A million dollar contribution has already been made to the fund by the Microsurgical Research Foundation as well as a matching fund of $500,000 donated by Dr. Troutman with the goal to raise a total of $3.5 million dollars. Kevin C. Greenidge, M.D., M.P.H., current Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology, has been invested as the first Troutman Distinguished Chair in Ophthalmology.

A fundraising dinner will be held on October 10th at The University Club (One West 54th Street) in Manhattan. The dinner will honor Dr. Troutman and his many achievements throughout his distinguished career and will formally invest Dr. Kevin C. Greenidge as the recipient of the endowed chair. Funds will support research in the areas of cornea cornea: see eye.  and refractive surgery, the special interest of Dr. Troutman, pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus strabismus (strəbĭz`məs), inability of the eyes to focus together because of an imbalance in the muscles that control eye movement; also called squint. , the specialty of Dr. Troutman's wife and fellow ophthalmologist ophthalmologist /oph·thal·mol·o·gist/ (of?thal-mol´ah-jist) a physician who specializes in ophthalmology.

Dr. Richard C. Troutman served as Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at SUNY Downstate from 1955 to 1983 and pioneered microsurgery of the eye in the United States by introducing instrumentation and techniques that transformed the effects of ophthalmology. In the 1950's, Dr. Troutman adapted the surgical microscope to accommodate surgery of the anterior segment of the eye and in the 1960's, he created the zoom magnification surgical microscope, which is now the instrument of choice for microsurgery. He developed innovative surgical techniques for corneal corneal

Dr. Kevin C. Greenidge was appointed as Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at SUNY Downstate in 1996 and has led a bold expansion of the department by recruiting faculty with outstanding clinical and research credentials. With a mission to establish the ophthalmology program's reputation as a center of research excellence, Dr. Greenidge's influence has provided an influx of public and private funding and has helped to initiate collaborative projects with researchers throughout the nation. By promoting Brooklyn as a practice environment for faculty physicians and residents-in-training and stressing the borough's many attractions as a place to build a career, Dr. Greenidge has also strived to find ways to provide desperately needed care for the many community residents. He serves as an associate examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology The American Board of Ophthalmology is the founding member of the American Board of Medical Specialties. Originally, a combined board of Ophthalmology & Otolaryngology, the specialties split into two board backed specialties in the 1960s. , on the board of the Glaucoma Foundation and The Eye Bank for Sight Restoration and is an honor award recipient of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He was recently elected trustee-at-large of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and was also presented with the Senior Achievement Award for scientific contributions.

Spaeth, Director of Glaucoma Service of Wills Eye Hospital/Jefferson Medical College and Louis J. Esposito Research Professor as well as the Honorable David Dinkins, former Mayor of New York City The Mayor of New York City is the head of the executive branch of the Government of New York City.
