Troutman, former chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at SUNY SUNY - State University of New York Downstate and current professor emeritus has created an endowment fund in his name in order to further ophthalmic research at SUNY Downstate Medical Center The State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn, better known as SUNY Downstate Medical Center, is an academic medical center and is the only one of its kind in the Borough of Brooklyn in New York City. , one of the nation's leading medical universities. The endowment will enable SUNY Downstate and its Department of Ophthalmology to advance scientific research, as well as enhance patient care and resident teaching. A million dollar contribution has already been made to the fund by the Microsurgical Research Foundation as well as a matching fund of $500,000 donated by Dr. Troutman with the goal to raise a total of $3.5 million dollars. Kevin C. Greenidge, M.D., M.P.H., current Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology, has been invested as the first Troutman Distinguished Chair in Ophthalmology. A fundraising dinner will be held on October 10th at The University Club (One West 54th Street) in Manhattan. The dinner will honor Dr. Troutman and his many achievements throughout his distinguished career and will formally invest Dr. Kevin C. Greenidge as the recipient of the endowed chair. Troutman served as Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at SUNY Downstate from 1955 to 1983 and pioneered microsurgery of the eye in the United States by introducing instrumentation and techniques that transformed the effects of ophthalmology. In the 1950's, Dr. Troutman adapted the surgical microscope to accommodate surgery of the anterior segment of the eye and in the 1960's, he created the zoom magnification surgical microscope, which is now the instrument of choice for microsurgery.
