MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 7, 2002

Kestrel kestrel

Any of several birds of prey (genus Falco) known for hovering while hunting. Kestrels prey on large insects, birds, and small mammals. The male is more colourful than the female. Kestrels are mainly Old World birds, but one species, the American kestrel (F.
Solutions, Inc. announced today that it has reduced its workforce by approximately 30%, with the reduction concentrated primarily in its 40 Gbit/s long-haul development team. The company is currently deploying the TalonMX(TM), its 10 Gbit/s transport product, among ILEC (Incumbent Local Exchange Carrier) A traditional local telephone company such as one of the Regional Bell companies (RBOCs). Contrast with CLEC. See ELEC and TELRIC.  and CLEC (Competitive Local Exchange Carrier) An organization offering local telephone service that is not one of the traditional telephone companies. The Telecommunications Act of 1996 allowed competition to the incumbent telcos (ILECs), enabling new companies (CLECs)  customers, and will continue to focus its efforts on the metro sector.

"We've determined that with general adoption of next-generation transport systems at least three away, Kestrel should intensify its current focus on solving near-term problems for carriers in the metro sector with our existing TalonMX optical transport product," explained Woodrow B. Cannon, President and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of Kestrel Solutions. "This increased focus means that we will be reducing our development efforts in the 40 Gbit/s long-haul sector, although the technology remains available based on market demand. Though difficult, this is the right decision for Kestrel and for our customers."

Kestrel Solutions recently achieved a significant technical milestone by transmitting seventeen 40 Gbit/s wavelengths at 50 GHz spacing over 2000 kilometers without any optical dispersion compensation or Raman amplification Raman amplification (pronounced /rʌmɑn/) is based on the Stimulated Raman Scattering (SRS) phenomenon, when a lower frequency 'signal' photon induces the inelastic scattering of a higher-frequency 'pump' photon in an optical medium in the nonlinear regime. . "Like the TalonMX, our 40 Gbit/s next generation technology is extremely robust," said Mike Rowan, CTO (Chief Technical Officer) The executive responsible for the technical direction of an organization. See CIO and salary survey.  and General Manager of Kestrel's 40G Line of Business. "This technology could be deployed using existing fiber spans, amplifiers and multiplexors, and would offer excellent cost advantages to carriers who need to add capacity to their networks. We believe that this achievement could lead to the widespread deployment of next generation transport solutions."

About Kestrel Solutions

Kestrel Solutions, Inc. meets metropolitan area bandwidth needs by providing flexible, cost-effective optical networking Communications between computers, telephones and other electronic devices using light. An optical network is far more reliable and has far greater potential transmission capacity than networking in the electrical domain. See optical fiber.  solutions for telecommunications companies worldwide. Founded in 1997, the company has developed the TalonMX(TM), an optical transport tool that cost effectively increases the current network capacity, enabling metropolitan telecommunications service providers to send up to 10 Gbit/s of bandwidth over a single fiber pair. The company has also developed a cost-effective 40 Gbit/s transmission technology.
