Kerry backers say something missing in GOP speeches.

"Sept. 11 and terrorism, those were the only two words tonight," said Springfield firefighter Michael Hundt. "They didn't discuss education, or the economy, jobs or clean air and water."

"I guess (President George Bush) doesn't have a vision for the future because he's living Sept. 11," Hundt said after watching the convention coverage in the living room of his north Eugene home.

Hundt and three other Springfield firefighters sporting gold "Firefighters for Kerry-Edwards" T-shirts gathered around the TV with Hundt's wife, Sjana Barcroft-Hundt, a local teacher, Oregon Attorney General The Oregon Attorney General is a statutory office within the executive branch of the state of Oregon, and serves as the chief legal officer of the state, heading its Department of Justice with its six operating divisions.  Hardy Myers Hardy Myers (born October 25 1939 in Electric Mills, Mississippi) is a lawyer and Democratic politician currently serving his third term as attorney general of the state of Oregon, United States. , and several other Kerry supporters.

The gathering was part of a statewide response by the Kerry campaign in Oregon, with similar gatherings in Portland and Medford.

The Kerry campaign wants to "make sure no claim by the president goes unscrutinized," said Adam Green Adam Green may refer to:

The Kerry campaign is very active in Oregon because the state "could well be determined by a razor-thin margin," Green said.

President Bush was there for the photo opportunity at ground zero following the destruction of the World Trade Center towers, but he hasn't followed through with his promises of more money and support for emergency workers, said Jeff Kronser, president of International Association of Firefighters, Local 1395 in Springfield.

"You see President Bush (make appearances) with firefighters in the background," Kronser said.

"I think there's a perception out there that he's doing everything he promised. I think he's failed to keep his promises."

That affects the broader community, Kronser added, because emergency responders on the front lines don't have the equipment and resources they need to effectively do their jobs and to provide the protection that the public expects.

The national firefighters union has officially endorsed Kerry, but its membership across the country is greatly divided in this presidential election, including members at the 75-member local in Springfield, Kronser said.

Kronser's family hosted Kerry's "front-porch" visit when the candidate appeared briefly in the Eugene/ Springfield area earlier this month.
