Kerr-McGee to Buy Kemira's [TiO.sub.2] Plants.


Kerr-McGee Chemical Corp., Oklahoma City Oklahoma City (1990 pop. 444,719), state capital, and seat of Oklahoma co., central Okla., on the North Canadian River; inc. 1890. The state's largest city, it is an important livestock market, a wholesale, distribution, industrial, and financial center, and a farm , Okla., has agreed to purchase two titanium dioxide pigment operations from Kemira Oyj of Finland. Both Kemira facilities use Kerr-McGee's chloride process The Chloride process is used to purify titanium dioxide from minerals containing at least 90 % titanium dioxide. In this process, the feedstock is heated at 900 °C with carbon and chlorine gas, giving titanium tetrachloride. , although the Savannah plant also uses the older sulfate sulfate, chemical compound containing the sulfate (SO4) radical. Sulfates are salts or esters of sulfuric acid, H2SO4, formed by replacing one or both of the hydrogens with a metal (e.g., sodium) or a radical (e.g., ammonium or ethyl).  technology. The sale effectively takes Kemira out of the plastics market for [TiO.sub.2]. It retains a plant in Finland that serves mainly paint, paper, and inks.
