Kern, who struggled with his putter Monday and shot 73-76, came out 90 minutes before his scheduled tee time and worked on his stroke. It paid off in a major way, as he made five birdies and no bogeys in beating J.J. Jakovac of Napa by five shots.

Kern birdied the first hole of the day by rolling in a 15-footer, then got another three holes later when he knocked a lob wedge A Lob Wedge, also called a Lofted Wedge or L-Wedge, is a golf club with a high amount of loft, usually 60 degrees, although the amount of loft ranges from 58 to 64 degrees in loft, except for a few brands of super-high lofted clubs made by fringe companies.  to four feet. Kern, who missed the cut at last year's championship, said the key to his final round was keeping the ball in play off the tee and "making the putts I needed to make."

Said Kern, a senior-to-be at Castro Valley High, "There are a lot of big trees here, so it's pretty important to hit the driver straight." To play in the championship, LaPlaunt had to miss out on qualifying for the U.S. Junior Girls Championship, which was also being held Tuesday. "I had to give it up," she said. "I thought this would be more important."

Youn Ku of Saratoga (81-83 - 164) won first place honors in the Girls Division, since LaPlaunt was not eligible for that award as overall champion. Hannah Hoch of Turlock (80-86 - 166) and Michelle Maddux of Pleasant Hill (82-84 - 166) tied for third.
