Kenya erupts in violence.[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] [2] NAIROBI, Kenya -- Kenya is considered one of Africa's most stable democracies, but the latest election shows how fragile that democracy really is. President Mwai Kibaki's tribe, the Kikuyu. has dominated Kenya's politics and economy for years. When Kibaki claimed victory on December 27 in what many experts say appeared to have been a rigged election, supporters of the other leading candidate exploded in rage. They attacked Kibaki's supporters and even burned a church where dozens of women and children were hiding. More than 480 people have died in the violence. U.S. diplomat Jendayi Frazer has been trying to bring the two sides together to end the crisis. She urged the candidates to work together to create a unity government that gives both sides some power. Frazer told The Associated Press that both sides most Likely tampered with the election vote count. "The people of Kenya were cheated," she says. |
