Kentucky Commissioner Elected NAIC President.Kentucky Commissioner George Nichols lll was elected president of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners Dec. 6 during the Winter National Meeting. "I appreciate the distinction of being the first African-American to serve as president in this organization's 128 year history," Nichols said. He had been vice president of the association and succeeds Connecticut Commissioner George Reider Jr. Kansas Commissioner Kathleen Sebelius was elected vice president, and Iowa Commissioner Tern tern, common name for a sea bird of the Old and New Worlds, smaller than the related gull. Because of their graceful flight and their long pointed wings and forked tails, some terns are called sea swallows. They plunge headlong into the water to catch small fish. The arctic tern migrates from the arctic to the antarctic. American terns include the common, least, Forster's, noddy, sooty, roseate, and royal terns, all of the genus Sterna. Vaughan was elected secretary/treasurer, succeeding Sebelius. The continuance of insurance regulation by states is among the priorities that Nichols said faces the NAIC in the coming year, especially with the recent passage of financial-services reform. "We are constantly under threats and challenges to put us out of business," he said. |
