Kelly R. Welsh to Join Northern Trust as General Counsel.

) today announced that Kelly R. Welsh will become Executive Vice President and General Counsel of the Corporation and its principal subsidiary, The Northern Trust Company, effective July 18, 2000. He will also serve as a member of the Corporation's Management Committee.

Welsh, 47, was with Ameritech Corporation from 1993-1999, serving most recently as Executive Vice President and General Counsel. He also served as Corporation Counsel for the City of Chicago from 1989-1993. From 1979-1989 he was an attorney with the Chicago-based international firm of Mayer, Brown & Platt, becoming a partner in 1985.

Welsh holds an A.B. degree from Harvard College, an M.A. degree from Sussex University, England, and a J.D. degree from Harvard Law School Harvard Law School (colloquially, Harvard Law or HLS) is one of the professional graduate schools of Harvard University. Located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Harvard Law is considered one of the most prestigious law schools in the United States. . From 1978-1979 he served as Law Clerk to the Hon. Luther M. Swygert, senior judge of the United States Court of Appeals The United States courts of appeals (or circuit courts) are the intermediate appellate courts of the United States federal court system. A court of appeals decides appeals from the district courts within its federal judicial circuit, and in some instances from other  for the Seventh Circuit.

He is currently Chairman of the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority, Board President of the Institute of Judicial Administration of the New York University School of Law Coordinates:  The New York University School of Law (NYU Law) is the law school of New York University. Established in 1835, the school offers the J.D., LL.M., and J.S.D.  and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Latin School. He and his wife, Ellen Alberding, reside in Chicago with their two children.

Welsh succeeds Peter L. Rossiter, Executive Vice President, who, it was announced in April, will be assuming responsibility for Northern Trust's Corporate and Institutional Services (C&IS) Business Unit when Sheila A. Penrose, President -- C&IS, retires.
