Kehillah Jewish High School Finds Home in Palo Alto; Strategically Located Next to the Campus for Jewish Life and Gideon Hausner Jewish Day School.

PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Kehillah Jewish High School, built on a foundation of academic excellence, has announced that it has found a new home at 3900 Fabian Way in Palo Alto. The site was chosen due to its proximity to the center of the school's service area, drawing students from Burlingame through San Jose and Fremont. The site, located at the heart of the fastest growing Bay Area Jewish community, is strategically located across from the Campus for Jewish Life (CJL), future home of the Palo Alto Jewish Community Center and senior living residences developed by the Jewish Home of San Francisco. The site, with 50,000 square feet, provides the school with ample space to accommodate future growth and is easily accessible via Caltrain.

"It is fantastic that Kehillah Jewish High School joins the CJL in providing a visible center for the Jewish community in the Bay Area and serves its educational needs," said Jim Koshland, president of the Campus of Jewish Life board of directors. "It is my hope that Kehillah serves not only as a high school, but as a place people can develop a sense of their Jewish self and foster Jewish ideas and concepts."

Following the completion of its current lease at San Jose's Blackford High School in June 2005, the school will relocate to Fabian Way in Palo Alto. The school has agreed to a long-term lease with an option to purchase. The new facility opens in July 2005 with 26 classrooms, including physics, chemistry, and biology labs, music and arts facilities including assembly space that seats up to 380 people. In addition, once the CJL campus is completed, the school has access to the Campus amenities that include a social/cultural hall, gymnasium, and swimming pool as well as additional recreational facilities. The Albert J. Schultz Jewish Community Center is exploring plans for students to use the basketball courts, volleyball, and other opportunities currently available. The new school site allows the school to serve not only as a high school, but as a community education center for adult education classes, networking events, speakers series, and additional programming.

Len Lehmann, chairman of the Site Selection Committee and immediate past-president of the Kehillah Jewish High School Board, led the effort to evaluate site options as well as the negotiations to secure the new Palo Alto location. He explained, "This location has the advantage of being directly across from the future Campus for Jewish Life, a home to a diverse group of social service and educational agencies. This new location provides us with a new kind of legacy for our children. Establishing Kehillah adjacent to the CJL allows for the sharing of resources, and joint planning of programs that were not possible before."

Kehillah's Head of School, Rabbi Reuven Greenvald, said, "Kehillah is built on a foundation of academic excellence. In less than a year Kehillah successfully became a Candidate for Accreditation, having been approved by the Schools Commission of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). We are coming up on our fourth year of operation. This move to Palo Alto provides a clear blue print for the growth and expansion of the school to build upon its achievements to date and to become an educational resource for the greater community as well as our students." Greenvald joined Kehillah Jewish High School this past August after spending two years in Israel as a Jerusalem Fellow in the Mandel School for Education Leadership and 17 years at the Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School in Rockville, MD, the last five of which he was Principal.

Kehillah Jewish High School is the only 9-12 institution in the area that provides a combination of college preparation and Judaic studies curricula. Jewish studies include instruction in modern Hebrew, Jewish History, and Jewish texts including materials from the biblical and rabbinic periods through today.
