Keep snow out of an unused chimney.

COUNTRYSIDE: Here's an idea I used back in 1974 to cover a large stone chimney on an estate I was managing at that time.

The owners would come out in midwinter to use their old 1906 log cabin.

In previous years the chimney could never be used because the heavy snowfalls would plug it up.

I found an old steel 50 gallon drum and had the ends cut off and had it cut in half. Next I measured the inside of the old chimney so the rebar frame would fit in the chimney. After all was made and put together, I set up my ladder and set it on top.

When last I was there on a visit (1990) it was still doing its job.--Hal Berger, Cashmere, Washington
