Nest box clarification

COUNTRYSIDE: I can see people's confusion with the buckets on page 41, in the Nov./Dec. 2007 issue. The "buckets" do not rotate. The purpose of the buckets is for the hens to nest in. What makes the roost predator-free is the metal roller. Snakes, skunks, possum, and coons can't climb metal rollers. The only thing I have seen that climbs the poles are ants, but if you put grease 3/4 the way up the poles, they can't make it either.

I hope this helps you in the confusion.

Here is another one for you. Don't throw those old metal trash cans away. Make a smoker out of them! Here is how:

I used two old metal refrigerator shelf grates for my grills. A two-inch hole in the lid will work for smoke stacks.--W. Redwine, Texas
