Kate Clinton's confusion.

Kate Clinton's criticism of the Vatican for its treatment of gays is understandable ("Reading Between the Holy Lines," May issue). But I disagree with Verb 1. disagree with - not be very easily digestible; "Spicy food disagrees with some people"
hurt - give trouble or pain to; "This exercise will hurt your back"
her usage of the word church and her suggestion that Catholic gays abandon ship.

Clinton confuses hierarchy and church. The Catholic Church consists of laity LAITY. Those persons who do not make a part of the clergy. In the United States the division of the people into clergy and laity is not authorized by law, but is, merely conventional. , religious, and clergy, including the hierarchy. I'm canceling my subscription because of Kate Clinton's hate-filled article and Emily Flake's even more hate-filled cartoon in the May issue. I'm going to miss Molly Ivins's page, but I love my country and my church too much to contribute to a magazine that confuses progressivism with hate.

Catholic bashing is still fashionable. It used to be blacks, Jews, and Catholics on the all-American hate list. Now only one remains. I am frankly tired of being the target of ill-informed bashers. Count me out. Bye, Molly--I'll catch you elsewhere.
