It is with an eye to the future that this book should be read. South Asia This article is about the geopolitical region in Asia. For geophysical treatments, see Indian subcontinent.
South Asia, also known as Southern Asia
is a region vital to the 21st century. Kashmir is a focus of its immense potiential and its divisions. Fresh insight into the history and people of that famous valley is timely as India and Pakistan look ahead after their first 50 years of independence and nationhood.

This is Victoria Schofield's fourth book on the Indian sub-continent. She is a good listener who makes us aware of many angles in the complex pattern, and of the men and women whose sufferings and hopes form it.

She give us the facts of history, ancient and modern. `Kashmir for sale in 1846' was a controversial transaction, still resented, handing the mainly Muslim population to a Hindu ruler. The term, however, has acquired the more specific meaning of a popular vote concerning changes of sovereignty, as , with independence as an option, was debated in the United Nations 115 times in the following 15 years but has never taken place.

Chapters on Mirage of independence and Vale of tears The phrase vale of tears refers to Earth and the sorrows left through life. "Vale" is a Middle English word meaning a valley or a dale. Like Psalm 23's reference to the valley of the shadow of death, the phrase implies that the wickedness of the world makes it dark and reprieve  give living history drawn from participants. In Hearts and minds she sensitively explores their hopes that (in the words of one Kashmiri) Kashmir might become `not a cot of hatred but a bridge of friendship'.
