Karen the editor's page.My junior year in high school, the editor of the school paper gave me the somewhat bland task of profiling Derek Delinger, a fab track prospect who'd recently transferred to my humble high. In the month he'd been at my school, he had managed to remain quite invisible. My friend Steve was stretching on the grass, and I asked him to point out Derek. "Derek? He's right there." At that moment, the sun shone straight into a pair of the most dazzling navy-blue eyes I'd ever seen. Derek smiled. I melted. While my school was hardly short on guys with good looks, Derek was a golden head and broad shoulders above the rest. I wish I could say I spent the next hour asking hard-hitting questions about the merits of flinging yourself over a six-foot bar. But instead I let Derek babble on about how he looked forward to "helping out the team, working with the coach, blah, blah, blah." My thoughts were consumed with this mantra mantra (măn`trə, mŭn–), in Hinduism and Buddhism, mystic words used in ritual and meditation. A mantra is believed to be the sound form of reality, having the power to bring into being the reality it represents. : "You are beautiful; you must be mine." By the end of the "interview," I had no idea what to write. But I had a plan--I'd invite Derek to my friend Kim's party on Saturday. Never mind that Elm had no plans for a party on Saturday. For once, I had won the guy lottery ... or so I thought. While it didn't exactly turn out that Derek had a couple of ex-girlfriends chopped up in a freezer back in Ohio, it did turn out he had a personality only slightly less bland than the spinach dip. Bore. Snore. So the moral of the story is this: Dating the boy of the month can be rewarding-like for about as long as it takes your girls to give you the "you're-with-HIM?!" high-five. But when it comes to guys who will make you happy in the long run, you might want to breeze past the dude whose only positive attribute is winning the 100-meter hottie race.
