Karate: Five given national call.

Byline: By BEN BARKER

FIVE YOUNGSTERS from Kirkby karate club have been called up into the England squad - prompting coach George Morrison to admit: They could go straight to the top.

Veteran coach Morrison, who oversaw the rise of 1988 European under-21 champion George McNally, revealed: "As a group, they are one of the best bunches of youngsters we have ever had here.

"They could go all the way."

Craig Reynolds and Kevin Hayes (both aged 17), Craig Davidson, Jamie Lee Jackson (both 16), and 14-year-old Joseph Rawcliffe have all been selected for England following trials at the city's Red Triangle club.

Morrison added: "It is a fantastic achievement.

"They are all top competitors and we hoped some of them would get in but for them all to do it was just great.

"They have all done it at local and national level since they started competing five or six years ago."
